Pacific Southwest Symposium(PSWS) is an annual civil engineering conference usually hosted in the Southern California region. Over the course of three days, 18 schools compete against each other in intramural sports, technical projects, and other miscellaneous events. This is a great way to meet people from other schools and to represent UCI on a region wide scale. This upcoming year's PSWS is being hosted at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, and we're excited to compete again in all 8 technical projects offered!
The PSWS Environmental Competition allows students to gain hands-on experience with researching and designing environmental and treatment systems. Last year, our team designed a large-scale Best Management Practice (BMP) System to redevelop Exposition Park in Los Angeles into an environmentally-friendly site. In the past, our project also involved the design of a low-cost filtration treatment system that we construct during the competition and are judged against other teams through water quality tests, treatment rate, and a technical design report.

Surveying
ASCE UCI is proud to announce that we received 1st place in surveying at the 2019 PSWS! Surveying is the technique of collecting information by analyzing the spatial distribution of land, and it is ultimately the foundation of all infrastructure. This project typically requires hands on work by using equipment to measure angles of elevation and distances between given points. Due to the pandemic, the project consisted of creating a topographic map and profile leveling to represent change in elevation and the shape of the terrain.
