Engineering a More Equitable Society: Healing Injustice within the Civil Engineering World
For the upcoming 2020-2021 year, ASCE-UCI is adding a pillar to its foundation: a Commitment to Equity. The heart-wrenching events unfolding across our country have uncovered an undeniable truth: Black Americans face a disproportionate amount of hazards in the pursuit of Happiness. While we may never have personally asked for our brothers and sisters to be dealt a bad hand, the reality is that Americans from minority groups still suffer from injustice every day - not just by discrimination of ethnicity and culture, but by a sustained campaign of oppression beginning at our nation's inception. While many of us enjoy great technological and sociological advances, we have left behind the generationally unheard.
So what do we do next? As civic-minded civil engineers, we always strive to create a positive impact - yet it is easy to overlook the harmful effects our projects can create. In order for us to create a truly inclusive, fair America, we need to understand the entirety of the impacts of our infrastructure system.
